Professor Stephen P. McCarthy joined the faculty of the Plastics Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1984 and is currently a tenured full professor.  He received his B.S. in Textile Chemistry from Southeastern Massachusetts University, a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, and his Ph.D in Macromolecular Science from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.  He worked as an Advanced Engineer in R&D for Owens Corning Fiberglas in Granville, Ohio.  He is director of the University of Massachusetts Lowell Institute for Plastics Innovation as well as the Center for Biodegradable Polymer Research which was initiated in 1989 and editor of the Journal of Polymers and the Environment.  Dr. McCarthy is an active member of the Bio-Environmental Polymer Society and an active member and task chairman in the ASTM subcommittee on Environmentally Degradable Plastics for Standardizing Test Methods and practices in this area.
